Song Meaning of “Morphine” by Hellspray
Morphine by Hellspray speaks of a state of numbness and emptiness that the narrator finds themselves in. It’s a song about the desolation of feeling disconnected from any emotion, and a desperate attempt to escape such a state. The lyrics refer to life becoming a nightmare, in which the narrator feels like a zombie, helpless and inhumane. But in this bleak sea of emptiness, there is a glimmer of hope found in the chorus: “Let the morphine set me free/ Now I don’t want to feel anything.” Here, the narrator seeks an escape from their pain in the form of a drug – something that will numb them from feeling anything at all. In a way, they are looking for a way to just turn everything off – to feel nothing, even if that means drowning out all the good and the bad. It’s a plea for happy numbness, of being outside of reality rather than in it. In the end, this song serves as a reminder that although life can often be bleak and hard, we should never forget the beauty that can be found in both the highs and the lows.
