Song Meaning of “Juan Pachanga” by Rubén Blades
Juan Pachanga tells the story of a young man from the Latinx culture striving to make something of himself, and has an underlying message of celebrating the hard work ethic of immigrants. The lyrics depict Juan’s desire to make a name for himself but having to do with less; while recognizing the hostile and disheartening attitude towards immigrants, he rises above and continues to chase his dreams.
The chorus talks about the discrimination faced by Juan, yet pushes him to keep fighting despite the lack of economic or social mobility in the Latinx culture. The message of the song is to fight for what you believe in even if the odds are against you, as Juan tries to get away from those who “are still saying he’ll never make it”. The title of the song, Juan Pachanga, lends itself to the idea of having a positive outlook despite difficult circumstances, and in fact, the term “pachanga” is slang for dance parties, or to have a good time.
The song also speaks to the issue of illegal immigration; while many immigrants work hard their entire lives and are paid a low wage, they are often criminalized. The line “resa dentro de la ley” (“Respecting the law”) highlights the respect for the rule of law which is often absent in the criticisms of immigrant populations.
