Song Meaning of “Índia” by Mococa & Paraíso
Índia tells a romantic story of two lovers from different worlds who come together and fall deeply in love despite the cultural misunderstandings, language, and barriers between them. The narrator, presumably a man, is a young and naive traveler who falls in love with an exotic native Indian woman and her exotic way of life. Even if there are disagreements between the two, he still follows her heart and chooses to accept her and her culture, representing a timeless message of true love and acceptance of others.
The song starts off by describing the immense beauty of the Indian woman and her home, with imagery of the desert and the captivating lights of the sky. This establishes the narrator’s fascinating infatuation with this seemingly faraway and mysterious woman, compared to his own life. He talks of wanting to hear her speak and to learn from her wisdom, but also wanting to protect her and keep her safe from everything that could endanger her.
The chorus sings of the narrator’s dream to take her away to his world, as a sign of their love and accepting each other. Despite initial hesitations, he believes in their connection and wants to be there for her through any difficulties that come their way. He recognizes that he can not and should not try to change her or her culture, but simply to cherish and admire it. He realizes his own privilege as an outsider, and promises her that she can rely on him no matter what happens.
