Song Meaning of “Things!” by Faith Prince
Things! from the musical A Catered Affair tells the story of a couple facing an upheaval in their idea of family and love. The song speaks of coming to terms with the changing times and the loss of certain expectations. Carrie, who is the bride-to-be, is struggling to come to terms with the pressures of her marriage while Harvey, the family’s father and husband, is trying to find his place in the family during this new transition.
The chorus reflects upon these changes in the most poignant way: “Things change/ That’s how it is/ People change/ That’s what they do/ Life changes/ That’s what it must/ That’s how it is/ When its all gone through”. The song is a reminder that life isn’t perfect and that no matter how hard we try to hold on to the things we love, eventually things will have to change.
