Song Meaning of “Perfect Storm” by Before The Dawn
“Perfect Storm” is a haunting track from the Finnish metal band, Before The Dawn. It is the nine track off their 2012 album, Deathstar Rising. It’s a song about man’s defiance and resilience but also a warning against our haughtiness in the face of unthinkable tragedy.
As the lyrics open up, we hear a strong and unshakeable determination of facing anything that comes our way no matter what: “Been through it all, and I’m still standing/ I’m drained but I’m proud to face the world.” Despite the immense struggle that has drawn us to our knees, we can still keep standing tall.
The storm that the title refers to is perhaps an ominous vision of the future, or it could be interpreted as a metaphor for the struggles of life. “The sun, the moon, our stars aligning/ Winds of disaster in the sky/ This time we’ll stand together/ To survive the perfect storm.” No matter what turmoil is thrown at us, we must overcome this perfect storm together and draw strength from one another.
The chorus is a heartening reminder to not give up, and to weather the storm with courage, even if we are alone: “Cause when you’re down, there’s still a chance, if you try/ Riding the wave, fight the perfect storm.” Like a hero of a book or movie, we steel ourselves and courageously battle our struggles with strength and courage.
The song is ultimately an anthem of resilience in the face of adversity. No matter how strong the forces of nature or life are, we must face them with strength, courage, and hope, together as a team. The song is a reminder to stay determined and keep going, no matter the consequences.
