Song Meaning of “No Glory” by Dropdead
No Glory speaks to the futility of war. It emphasizes the senselessness of people fighting and dying in the name of some greater cause or purpose, which only serves to steal lives and repeat the same mistakes of the past. The narrator narrates their own story of coming of age during a war and being shown the horrors of what is occurring around them. They pose in their lyrics the easy answer of avoiding war by leaving, but also realize that many cannot do so : “Useless destruction, pointless wounds, a million voices begging to leave”.
The chorus captures the theme of the song as the narrator pleads, “Let’s find a way that don’t involve no glory, nowhere to hide, just listen to the warning. There’s nothing to fear but ourselves.” The narrator recognizes that fear of “ourselves” is what drives us to wage war and argues that through understanding and communication, a solution can be found that will avoid any bloodshed or destruction. The song ultimately illustrates the importance of valuing peace over war and the tragedy of wartime deaths.
