Song Meaning of “Restrained Remains” by General Surgery
Restrained Remains reflects upon the utter helplessness we feel when confronted with situations that we cannot control. The narrator describes being utterly burdened by a feeling of paralysis, a personal “weight” that so heavily overwhelms them that all action and free will is taken away. We are left to feel completely bound to our own despair, as though we are drowning in a sea of our own sorrows, unable to climb out or even understand why we’re feeling such a way.
The chorus sums up this theme as it defiantly proclaims “restrained remains, now forever falls the same,” reinforcing the idea that whatever happens in life, we are stuck in our own self-imposed prison of despair. Though we may feel as if our lives will never change, the narrator insists that the only way to have any potential for a brighter future is to accept our confined existence and keep striving for something better, no matter how far away it seems.
