Song Meaning of “Six” by Ghostlimb
Six is a song about a man’s struggle with mental health. He talks about how he had arrived at a moment in his life where he felt disillusioned and hopeless, almost to the point of losing his will to continue living. The protagonist expresses his feelings of being trapped in an oppressive environment, feeling disconnected from the world and not having any real anchors in his life.
He expresses his desperation in the chorus, repeating the line “I’m running in circles” to signify the slow, painful way he was being driven into a depressive state. By singing the line “six feet under the surface,” he talks about how he was slowly emotionally burying himself, going deeper and deeper until he felt completely defeated and surrounded by darkness.
The protagonist explains that he has been fighting these inner demons for a while, trying to fight his way out and regain some semblance of control over his life. He was going through a kind of purgation and the feeling of guilt for not being the person he wants to be used to overwhelm him.
The protagonist pleads for help from a higher being to show him the way and if possible, spare him from this anguish. He expresses a need for someone to break through his walls and reignite his hope and desire for a better life.
By the end of the song, the protagonist finds solace in the fact that he has an escape route, however dark and grim his current situation may be. He looks to the future with hope, understanding that despite the despair, he is only six feet away from his light at the end of the tunnel.
