Song Meaning of “Are You In? – Live at HQ, Los Angeles, CA – June/July 2011” by Incubus
Life is full of uncertainty, and it’s easy to feel alone. In “Are You In?”, the band Incubus encourages listeners to reach out and ask for companionship as well as accept it when it’s offered.
The song opens up with lead singer Brandon Boyd asking, “Are you in? Are you ready for the day?” He’s setting the scene for a journey that he can’t take alone, no matter how far he gets, he needs help.
The chorus drives home the band’s point – that when faced with uncertainty, when life gets rough, it’s important to ask for help. He encourages us to reach out with the lyrics, “Are you in, in on the ride, when the dawn comes and the cold sky (outside) governs the night? Are you in, in on the rage, when we’re born to be every ounce of might on the edge of big life and the stage of age?”
As Boyd’s vocal delivery becomes increasingly desperate, his words become a plea: “I don’t want to move without you right here/I’ll lose strength without you//Are you in? Are you in?”
The song ends with Boyd’s raw call for solidarity, “Give me company.” It’s a reminder that it’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to accept it when it’s offered. We’re in this together.
