Song Meaning (Interpretation) of “Born By The Devil – Bonus track” by Lightnin’ Hopkins
“Born By The Devil” by Lightnin’ Hopkins tells the story of a man who is born with a dark destiny, a burden set by the Devil himself. Despite his best efforts to save himself, the man is doomed to sin and struggle against the darkness that has been a part of him since birth. The guitar and vocal line describes a list of characters such as “mother, father, sister and brother” which the man has experienced in his life and the struggles they have shared together. The lyrics of the chorus paint a stark picture of the man’s predestined fate: “Born by the devil, live and die for the devil.” Throughout the song, Hopkins uses the blues rhythm to reflect the man’s pain and sorrow, yet ultimately there is an acceptance of his fate. This acceptance of his destiny may be seen as a reminder to us all that life’s challenges must be faced with courage and resilience, if we are to experience true emancipation.
