Song Meaning of “Fading” by Matt Moore

“Fading” by Matt Moore is a melancholic reflection on the loss of a cherished relationship. Throughout the song, Moore describes the fading of the connection that he once shared with the person of his affection.

The beginning of the song speaks of the inevitability of parting ways with a person he loves – “We used to float, the way that time won’t wait for us/And now our colors just fade out.” The metaphor he uses here is that of two colors mixing and eventually fading until the original colors are unrecognizable. This speaks to the gradual erosion of the relationship which has happened, and Moore doesn’t seem to be able to do anything to stop it.

The following chorus is a lament for what once was – “This love we’ve had, it’s gone and faded/And if I should walk, I have it all/But I’ll never get that feeling back.” Moore expresses that although he can look back fondly on their time together, the feeling of the connection he once felt will never be the same. This speaks to the bittersweet nostalgia which often lingers in the aftermath of a relationship ending.

The song then goes on to describe the breakup itself, and how this event has impacted the feelings that he has for both himself and his former partner – “And when we said goodbye, it was a war inside of me/And it left me lost and I’m just fading.” The emotionally-charged “war” he speaks of is the inner conflict he feels between staying together and ending the relationship. The result is a feeling of being “lost”, a sentiment which is echoed in the chorus – “this empty heart of mine is fading”.

Towards the end of the song, Moore sings of how he still holds hope that things can be reconciled – “If I could take us back, I’d try it everyday” – but ultimately he accepts that the relationship is doomed to fade into the past.

Overall, this song is a heartfelt examination of the pain and sorrow that comes with losing something so dear. It also serves as a reminder that although the feelings of love may fade, the memories made and lessons learned will stay with us forever.
