Song Meaning of “Honey-Dew” by Never Shout Never
The song ‘Honey-Dew’ by Never Shout Never speaks to a common experience of infatuation, the feeling of being in love that is so sweet that it is better than any honey-dew melon. It speaks to a relationship doomed from the start but where both still hold on, as they are together for the intoxicating feeling rather than compatibility.
The song starts with the tone of acceptance and closure, almost as if the artist is saying that going through this experience in necessary to become wiser and learn from it. He states that the two are ‘smeared in honey-dew’ to describe the feeling that they both want to savor before the inevitable end. He also talks about a ‘shallow ocean’ between them which serves to show that despite the sweet physical attraction, love is never present to keep them together. Additionally, he mentions the line ‘into the night, our eyes adjusting to the sight’ which is referring to how things weren’t always perfect when it came to the relationship, and they are both beginning to notice the differences in each other.
The chorus gives more insight into the headspace of the artist. He says that he’s ‘headstrong in my heart’ which speaks to his determination in staying in this relationship as it’s only providing superficial pleasure. He also states ‘I won’t admit it locked away in a closet’ to hint at the fact that he’s consciously aware he’s not fully happy but chooses to deny it for fear of losing the physical connection. Ultimately though, his plea of ‘Don’t we just leave it where it lay’ speaks to his desire to part ways peacefully but with regret that the love that could’ve been could not blossom due to their dysfunctions.
At the end of the song, he pleads for the both of them to move on with their lives, as he knows that there is no more he can do to ensure that the two of them stay together. All in all, the song reflects the poem truth; that love is sometimes not enough to keep two people together and that one can only keep the sweet memories intact in their mind before they part ways.
