Song Meaning of “Only for a Mintue” by The Scutches
Only for a Minute tells the story of a fleeting romance, the kind of relationship that fizzles out even before you have a chance to get to know each other. The singer is trying to make sense of the fleeting emotions, but ultimately realizes that those feelings were never meant to last. The lyrics are full of doubt as the speaker wonders if things between them could have been different, had the relationship gotten a chance to develop.
The chorus of Only for a Minute looks at the way that their short-lived relationship has left the singer feeling: “Only for a minute, only a moment, only a minute, then gone forever / So if you recall, that’s all it was, just a minute, barely holding together.” Despite the fact that it was over quickly, the feelings of love and lust that the singer had were real and still reverberating within them. They know that whatever they felt, even if it only lasted for a minute, was powerful and real.
The sadness of the song is amplified near the end, where the singer comes to terms with what was and what could have been: “What else can I say, can I even try to save us, when both of us knew, this was never going to last.” They can’t argue with the knowledge that the relationship simply wasn’t meant to be, and makes peace with the idea.
